Effect of Nd:YAG laser on shear bond strength of composite to dentine

Aim: This study carried out for the evaluation of the effect of Nd:YAG laser on shear bond strength of composite to pretreated dentine in invitro situations.

Method & Materials: The study conducted experimentally on 20 freshly extracted human teeth. After preparation of teeth dentine, they were divided to two controls and experimental groups. Experimental group teeth were subjected to 20mJ/Pulse laser. Tetric Ceram composite with syntac bond was placed on the centre of dentinal surface of teeth and strength of the teeth were tested using Instron machine. For the evaluation of dentinal surface, 6 teeth were selected, of which, 3 were subjected to laser energy and the remaining teeth were not. After fixation, drying and coating, specimens were examined by Stereomicroscope.

Results: Shear bond strength of control group was 2.2±1.4 Mpa and experimental group was 2.5±0.7, showing no statistical difference between two groups. Stereomicroscopic examinations showed that most of dentinal tubules were closed after using laser radiation.

Conclusion: It seems that the use of Nd:YAG laser doesn’t affect shear bond strength of Tetric Ceram composite with Syntac bond.
