Various types of medication and nonpharmacological composition for related symptoms has been suggested. Saliva Substitute (Artificial Saliva) have not proven to be acceptable to many patients, are not available and are expensive. The purpose of this study is to compare the effectiveness of a manufactured saliva substitute with linssed extract basil (Natural Mucinogen) with specific formulation in patient with xerostomia.

Method & Materials: This clinical trial, cross-over and double – blind study was done on 30 patients suffering from dry mouth. 24 post irradiation patients, 4 diabetic patients and 2 patients with drug induced xerostomia used a Saliva Substitute and lissed mucilage, each for almost 1 week in an arbitrary sequence. Each patient had to complete a questionnaire at 3 different intervals during the trial.

Results: It is concluded that application of Saliva Substitute and linssed extract basil in amelioration of symptoms of xerostomia, respiration, duglutition, mastication and speech. Perception of taste and also inflammation and irritation of mucosa is almost similar and statistically is not significant.

Conclusion: Linssed extract basil (Natural Mucinogen) can be used for reduction of dry mouth related symptoms.
